I absolutely love showing the children how science works. Instead of doing something easy, like a Baking Soda Volcano, I thought "Let's do something HARD" like demonstrate how you can create CO2 with a baking soda volcano and how the gas will put out the candles for you!
- Here we have candles, vinegar, and baking soda… the children laughing maniacally proved that it must be the recipe for something awesome!
- They were ready for the experiment, especially the one who got to play with the fire.
- He seems to be pondering the nature of the universe, and the vinegar that smells disgusting but is clear like water.
- A picture speaks a thousand words, and the look on his face is one of discovery, and mischief.
- This is the little pyromaniacs favorite part, “Fire is cool!” The goal was to make the baking soda volcano, and off of that comes CO2 gas that’s heavier than air (but easily blown away by the wind) and the gas would then pour out onto the candles and put them out.
- The baking soda mixed with vinegar, the CO2 put out the fire near it, but a light breeze saved the other candles from being put out. This experiment is BEST done inside… with the ceiling fan off.
- I used a LOT more baking soda and vinegar than I would have had to inside, but the children laughed most of the time we did it, so it made it worth it. Until this picture anyway as you can see the bored look on my second son’s face.

I don't think that is a bored face, it looks like a I don't feel good face.
Again with tugging the ear. Cool experiment. I think I'll do it.
