The Pinewood Derby is an epic time for boys around the age of my boys. I remember, vaguely, the whole setup and anticipation.
My children had a blast, even though the most popular question was "Did you do his car for him?" to which I have to answer "I did cut out their design" and I helped with the spray paint, but the design was theirs, and the ideas weren't mine.
My genius son said "I saw on Mythbusters that they dimpled a car and it worked well. I want to dimple mine." So we did… and it worked flawlessly for him. I'm incredibly impressed!
- The children drew the designs, but I have a phobia about letting them use the jigsaw or electric sander.
- Using the metal hangers made painting the cars much easier. I did let them help, as much as you can let children play with spray paint without worrying about someone calling Child Protective Services.
- It’s the starting lineup, my children had me stencil the star wars old republic symbol on the front of the cars. (I love that they are as dorky about star wars as I am!)
- The children waited around a little for the race to start.
- My sons car is the white one, and it did REALLY well.
- The red one belongs to my son, poor guy would have done so much better, but I super glued his tire 20 minutes before the race (on accident) and only barely was able to fix it good enough for him to place 3rd in his age group.
- You can see my sons white car, this was pretty much par for the course, he did so fantastic! I love that he tweaked it on his own and got it to go so fast!
- My favorite part of it was seeing how very joyful he was at his performance, and even more was how he knew it was his fault.
