A dream catcher, comes from the Native American culture and is a net that hangs over or near your head as you sleep and catches good and bad dreams. The good dreams are filtered down to the person sleeping through the hole in the center and the feathers at the bottom help them slip gently (so as to not wake the dreamer) onto the sleeping head, the bad dreams are captured and kept away from the dreamer until they can be disintegrated by the light of day.
Once upon a time I wrote a poem that needs you to know what a dream catcher is and how it works. I'll repost it here:
From "The Dreamcatcher":
Darkness surrounds me and penetrates me, it is who I am! With my every move I leak hate, anxiety, and the darkest nastiest stress known to man. I flit through the night on the wings of pure angst, silent as the breeze I watch for a sleeping form, I take special pleasure in finding someone who most needs a good nights sleep.
My target glows through the protective walls like a beacon, calling me as I scan through an ocean of roof tops, her blankets are ruffled from a restless night. With sinister supposition I contemplate that if anyone needs a decent nights sleep… it is her. my eyes glow with a vicious vision, I swoop and spiral through the roof and into the room, the sleeping form is graceful in its grasp for a good nights sleep. I glide with a silent cackle like rustling leaves as I pass through the room. I move closer, her lips so red, her skin so white. With a burst of speed I bolt towards her head, room darkens as I surge in anticipation, there's a flash and a tugging, then all is black a peaceful black as the sleeping form rolls over with a deep sigh and slumbers.
I sit… patience a lost attribute I struggle to gain in my long hours of darkness. The netting around me glows with the light of the moon, I am trapped, lost to my world, my victim glows tauntingly beneath me. Reaching her is no longer a goal, the thought is a mocking call to one without hope of escape.I ponder my life, the good nights sleep I’ve destroyed, I watch as another form of darkness, a near echo of my own with dark eyes flashing in giddy pride crashes into the net beside me, I almost laugh at my withheld warning as it curses whisper through the air, we are stopped by the mystical force that binds us. A white light filled with hope, a dream of playful joy, giggles and spins around us then flies through the center of the net, it was waving as though clueless to our plight, down the feathers to float into my target, who has the effrontery to respond with a smile! Further mocking the powerless darkness trapped impotently above her… AND she has the nerve to giggle in response to something that carefree dream just whispered!
The night passes slowly, each moment is sacred, I know it is my last and I hold it precious as the windows lightens with an approaching dawn. I cry out as the sun rises, the net glows with the light of day and I am gone.
